Zambia's 1966 coinage was the country's first fully independent issue, replacing the rhodesia and Nyasaland series that had circulated through the transition period following independence in 1964. The shilling denomination itself was a deliberate holdover — Kenneth Kaunda's government retained familiar colonial unit names initially to ease public adoption before decimalization swept them out entirely in 1968, when the kwacha and ngwee system took over.
