Rhodesia's 1964 coinage was issued in the immediate wake of the colony's break from the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which dissolved at the end of 1963. Southern Rhodesia briefly reverted to that name before the government unilaterally dropped "Southern" in October 1964 — a pointed act of political assertiveness under Ian Smith, who became Prime Minister that same year. This coin predates the Unilateral Declaration of Independence by fourteen months, placing it in the narrow window when Rhodesia still nominally recognized the Crown while rapidly severing its practical ties to London.
The dual denomination — shilling and cents — reflects the transitional monetary system adopted ahead of decimalization, which was completed with the introduction of the Rhodesian Dollar in 1970.
