Issued as part of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's global commemorative coin program, which ran through the 1970s and enlisted dozens of governments to mint coins promoting food security messaging. Somalia's participation came during the early years of Siad Barre's socialist government, which had nationalized much of the economy following the 1969 coup and was formally aligned with the Soviet Union until a rupture in 1977 over the Ogaden War.
FAO issues from this period were often struck in small quantities and saw limited domestic circulation, making them more common in collector holdings than in Somali hands.
