Theresienstadt — the Nazi propaganda showpiece sold to the Red Cross as a "model ghetto" — held over 150,000 Jews between 1941 and 1945, of whom roughly 90,000 were deported east to the extermination camps. Israel's Hanukkah lamp series, running annually since 1958, draws from diaspora communities and historical Jewish centers; selecting Theresienstadt placed the series in direct confrontation with the Holocaust rather than simply celebrating liturgical heritage.
The lamp type referenced was documented by Yad Vashem from artifacts recovered after liberation. Prisoners had fashioned menorot from scavenged materials inside the camp.
