Safi I inherited the Safavid throne in 1629 following the death of Abbas I — the ruler who had transformed the dynasty into a regional superpower — and almost immediately began purging the court of anyone he perceived as a threat, including experienced commanders and administrators. The early years of his reign were marked by military setbacks against the Ottomans, with Safavid forces losing Baghdad in 1638 after decades of contested control.
The Esfahan mint was the imperial mint par excellence under the Safavids, operating under direct court supervision. Shahi-denomination silver from this period frequently shows adjustment marks from the weight-correction process used to meet the strict tariff standards.
