| Obverse lettering | السلطان العادل الکامل الهادی الوالی ابوالمظفر شاه اسمعیل بهادرخان الصفوی خلد الله ملکه و سلطانه ضرب هرات ۹۱۶ (Translation: The sultan, the just the perfect, the spiritual guide the friend father of the victorious one Shah Isma`il valiant al-safawi, may Allah perpetuate his reign and his sultanate struck at Harat 916.) |
| Reverse description | The reverse field is entirely filled with an elaborate intertwined Arabic legend in Nasta'liq script, enumerating the Twelver Shi'a declaration of faith and the names of the Twelve Imams. The Shahada — 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Ali is the Friend of Allah' — forms the central devotional core of the inscription, with the names of the remaining eleven Imams arranged in paired sequence radiating through the field. A beaded inner border encircles the inscription, consistent with the obverse treatment. The densely interlocking letterforms reflect the distinctly Shi'a character that Shah Isma'il I deliberately introduced into Safavid coinage as a statement of dynastic and sectarian identity. |
