Bonifacio IV ruled Montferrat under chronic financial pressure, squeezed between the competing ambitions of France and the Sforza-aligned powers during the Italian Wars. The sezzino was the workhorse denomination of the Piedmontese monetary system, and billon issues from marquisate mints of this period were frequently debased below their nominal tariff — a persistent source of friction with neighboring communes and merchants who refused them at face value.
Bonifacio died in 1530 without a male heir, ending the Paleologus line in Montferrat and triggering a succession dispute that would eventually deliver the marquisate to the Gonzaga.
