| Obverse description | Bust of Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio, facing right, with flowing hair and draped shoulders, rendered in a crude hammered style typical of minor copper coinage of the period. The portrait occupies the majority of the field, with the facial features and drapery visible despite the characteristic wear and irregular flan. A partial Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading FRA I M R E C D VII, abbreviating the ruler's titles as Duke of Modena, Reggio, and Carpi. The flan is irregular in shape, consistent with hand-struck production. |
