The 1979 sertum series was issued by Bhutan to mark the coronation of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who had ascended to the Dragon Throne in 1974 at age eighteen following the death of his father. These were not circulation coins — Bhutan had no tradition of gold coinage in everyday commerce, and the pieces were produced explicitly for the international collector market through arrangements with foreign minting agencies.
The .917 fineness matches the historic British sovereign standard, a deliberate choice that made the pieces legible to Western bullion buyers.
