The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas replaced the old Central Bank of the Philippines in 1993 following a legislative restructuring meant to insulate monetary policy from executive interference — a direct institutional response to the Marcos-era abuses of the previous central bank. This denomination was among the first issued under the new authority.
By the early 2000s, the 1 sentimo had become functionally useless in daily commerce, with merchants routinely rounding transactions to the nearest 25 centavos. The BSP continued minting sporadically through 2017 largely for collector sets and vending applications rather than genuine circulation demand.
