Issued as part of the FAO's 1970s campaign to promote global food security awareness through circulating coinage, this series was adopted by dozens of small nations — Tonga among them — largely as a diplomatic gesture toward the UN agency rather than in response to any domestic agricultural crisis. Tonga's subsistence and export economy at the time was built primarily on copra and bananas, neither of which required the kind of institutional agricultural reform the FAO was nominally promoting.
