Obverse description A central sunburst radiates from a raised circular boss at the centre of the field, with bold rays extending to the beaded border. The denomination numerals '1' and 'SN.' flank the sunburst to the left and right respectively. Three kanji characters reading 'Dai Nippon Hon' (Great Japan) are inscribed above the sunburst, while four kanji characters reading 'Taisho Go-nen' (Year 5 of Taisho) appear below. The entire design is enclosed within a continuous beaded inner border with a raised outer rim.
