The 2017 Golden Jubilee coinage marked fifty years of Hassanal Bolkiah's rule following his accession in 1967, making him one of the longest-reigning current monarchs in the world. Brunei's currency authority used the jubilee as an opportunity to refresh the portrait series — the third portrait issue replacing its predecessor across the circulating denominations. These small-denomination pieces saw genuine everyday use in a country where the Brunei dollar circulates at parity with the Singapore dollar under a 1967 Currency Interchangeability Agreement still in force today.
