Ulrich III ruled Mecklenburg-Güstrow as part of the dynastic partition that repeatedly divided Mecklenburg between ducal lines throughout the sixteenth century. The Sechsling — a low-denomination silver piece — was the workhorse of small retail transactions in northern German markets, and production by individual territorial princes was common before the Holy Roman Empire's coinage reforms began tightening regional minting rights in the following century.
Kunzel 133 is the standard reference for this type within the Mecklenburg series.
