Hamburg's Sechsling denomination survived well into the nineteenth century largely through institutional inertia — the city's Senate was notoriously resistant to monetary reform, and small billon fractions continued circulating alongside the new Prussian-influenced coinage long after neighboring states had abandoned theirs. By 1855, Hamburg was one of the last German city-states still striking low-denomination billon, a habit it would finally surrender when it joined the North German monetary convention in 1857.
