The design is rendered in a typical late German Renaissance hammered style with no surrounding legend. Konstanz struck this small silver piece in 1627 during the early, devastating phase of the Thirty Years' War, when the city was navigating the dangerous political ground between Catholic Imperial forces and its own Protestant sympathies. The city would eventually be occupied by Imperial troops in 1628, making issues from the immediately preceding years operationally significant — local coinage needed to sustain commerce before outside monetary authority arrived to displace it.
