1 Scudo Revolutionary coinage, Type I - without tree

Bologna's revolutionary coinage of 1796–97 emerged directly from Napoleon's Italian campaign, struck after French forces effectively dismantled Papal authority over the city in June 1796. The Type I designation — distinguished by the absence of the liberty tree — places this issue at the very opening of the republic's existence, before the tree symbol was incorporated as the dominant emblem of the new civic order. The Cispadane Republic that briefly absorbed Bologna was itself dissolved within months, making the window for this type exceptionally narrow.

Surviving examples in any grade are genuinely scarce. The entire republican monetary experiment lasted under two years before Napoleon reorganized the Italian territories again.
