Obverse description Central field displays a crowned imperial eagle with spread wings, bearing a shield on its breast, rendered in the hammered style typical of early sixteenth-century Italian feudal coinage. Radiating lines or a rayed motif emanate from the central device, filling the lower field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded or rope inner border. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading PETRVS LVCAS FLIS LAVAN CO C D, identifying the issuing lord Pier Luca Fieschi as Count of Masserano. The irregular flan and bold relief are characteristic of hand-struck Renaissance gold coinage.
