San Marino's gold scudo series, revived in the 1970s as the republic began issuing collector coinage in earnest, was tied to themes selected annually by the governing council. The 1979 "Peace" issue came at a moment of particular Cold War tension — NATO's dual-track decision, announced that same December, set the alliance on a course toward deploying Pershing II missiles in Western Europe.
Struck by the Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato in Rome, as was standard for San Marino's issues of this period. Mintage figures were tightly controlled to sustain collector demand.
