Michele Antonio ruled Saluzzo as a French client, and the marquisate's coins from this period reflect that awkward dependency — struck to broadly French monetary standards while nominally independent. Saluzzo sat between the Duchy of Savoy and the Kingdom of France, and Michele Antonio spent much of his reign navigating that pressure, ultimately dying in French captivity in 1528, the same year the coinage series ends.
Farouk reference Fr#160 places this among the rarer gold issues of the minor Italian states. Surviving examples are infrequent enough that auction appearances remain notable events.
