The eagle is rendered in the late medieval heraldic style typical of northern Italian Renaissance coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device reading IO GIORGIVS MARChIO MONTIS FERAT, identifying the issuer as John George Palaeologus, Marquis of Montferrat. The lettering is separated by pellets or stops and runs continuously around the border. |
