Obverse description Central device depicts a displayed imperial double-headed eagle with spread wings, the heads facing outward to left and right, with an escutcheon bearing the arms of Montferrat on the breast. The eagle is rendered in the late medieval heraldic style typical of northern Italian Renaissance coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device reading IO GIORGIVS MARChIO MONTIS FERAT, identifying the issuer as John George Palaeologus, Marquis of Montferrat. The lettering is separated by pellets or stops and runs continuously around the border.
