| Obverse description | Central quartered and subdivided shield of manifold arms, surmounted by a crown, representing the combined heraldic devices of the joint rulers Frederick II Gonzaga and Margaret Paleologa of Montferrat. The elaborately detailed escutcheon is set within a circular legend reading FED GON MARGA PALE MONT FE MAR, rendered in Gothic lettering around the periphery. The shield displays multiple quarterings incorporating the Gonzaga, Paleologa, and Montferrat armorial bearings. The entire composition is characteristic of the Italian Renaissance hammered coinage style, with irregular flan edges typical of the period. |
