| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a large, elaborately quartered shield of manifold arms surmounted by an imperial crown, displaying the composite heraldic devices of Philip II as King of Spain and Duke of Milan, including castles, lions, fleurs-de-lis, and the Visconti biscione among other quarterings. The shield is rendered in fine relief with bold hatching typical of Renaissance hammered coinage. The Latin legend runs along the outer border within a rope or cable inner circle, reading PHI REX ET MIL DVX, identifying Philip as King and Duke of Milan. |
