Masserano was a tiny lordship in Piedmont that punched well above its weight in coin production, exploiting imperial privileges granted under the complex feudal patchwork of northern Italy. Filiberto Ferrero-Fieschi held the territory during a period when the Fieschi family — one of Genoa's great dynastic houses — had intermarried with the Ferrero line, producing this hyphenated authority. The County's gold issues from this period are exceptionally rare survivors, minted in small quantities from a jurisdiction that ceased independent coinage within decades of this issue.
