| Obverse description | Quartered shield occupying the central field, divided by a plain cross into four quarters: the upper-left and lower-right quarters each bear three fleurs-de-lis arranged in the French royal manner, while the upper-right and lower-left quarters display a rampant lion passant. The shield is set within a circular pearl border, surrounded by a continuous Latin legend running along the outer rim of the coin. The overall style is characteristic of early sixteenth-century Italian hammered gold coinage, with bold relief and an irregular flan. |
