Additional information

San Marino joined the International Monetary Fund in 1992, a notable step for a microstate that had long operated under a customs union with Italy and used the Italian lira as its de facto currency. The 1993 scudo gold issue commemorates that accession. San Marino's domestic coinage series was largely collector-driven by this period — circulation demand was minimal — and these gold pieces were produced in limited numbers for the numismatic market rather than any practical monetary function.
