| Reverse description | A fimbriated and lilied cross occupies the center of the field, its arms terminating in fleur-de-lis ornaments, dividing the space into four quarters. The upper two quarters display the personal arms of the vice-legate Monsignor Doria, while the lower quarters bear the arms of the city of Bologna. The circular legend BONONIA DOCET runs along the periphery, referencing Bologna's ancient reputation as a seat of learning. The composition is heraldically formal and carefully balanced, characteristic of pontifical gold coinage struck at Bologna in the sixteenth century. |
