| 表面の説明 | Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Pius IV (Medici arms: a shield charged with six roundels, five in orle and one at the base), surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys — the traditional symbols of pontifical authority. The shield is set within an ornate cartouche with decorative mantling. The circular legend reads PIVS·IIII·PONT·MAX· (Pius IV, Supreme Pontiff), disposed around the periphery of the flan in Latin capitals, with pellet stops separating the words. |

Pius IV — born Giovanni Angelo Medici, though of no direct relation to the Florentine dynasty despite persistent contemporary confusion — closed the Council of Trent in December 1563, just months before this scudo was struck. The Bologna mint operated under papal authority but with a degree of civic administrative involvement that occasionally produced minor die inconsistencies across the run, which partly explains the multiple MIR subvarieties documented for this type.
His pontificate ended with his death in December 1565, making this a short emission window of roughly two years.
