Beschrijving voorzijde Central field displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Pius IV (Giovanni Angelo Medici), featuring a shield charged with the Medici roundels (balls) arranged in their characteristic pattern, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield is set within an ornate cartouche with scrollwork. The surrounding legend reads PIVS IIII PONT MAX, separated by pellets, running clockwise within a beaded border. The entire composition is struck in the bold, high-relief hammered style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century papal gold coinage.

Beschrijving keerzijde Central field features an ornate floriated cross with fleur-de-lis terminals and elaborate scrollwork flourishes at the angles, dividing the field into four quarters. The circular legend BONONIA DOCET runs around the periphery within a beaded border, referencing Bologna's renowned university. The overall design reflects the refined Renaissance engraving tradition of the Bologna Mint.
