| Additional information |
Paul III — Alessandro Farnese — reigned long enough to oversee both the opening of the Council of Trent in 1545 and the formal establishment of the Society of Jesus in 1540, making his pontificate one of the most consequential for the Counter-Reformation's early machinery. The scudo d'oro was his primary gold instrument, struck at Rome through the final years of a pontificate that ended with his death in November 1549 at age 81.
The MIR references covering this type span multiple die marriages, with sword orientation used as a primary classifier distinguishing this emission from related issues under the same pope.
