Reverse description A fimbriated and lilied cross occupies the central field, its arms decorated with lily terminals in the Farnese heraldic tradition. The cross divides the field into four quarters, with the arms of the papal legate Ascanio Sforza and the civic arms of Bologna positioned in the lower portions of the design. The composition reflects the dual authority of papal and communal governance over Bologna. The circumferential legend BONONIA DOCET — 'Bologna teaches' — references the city's celebrated university tradition. The design is executed in the characteristic Renaissance hammered style with a beaded border.
