| Reverse description | A fimbriated and lilied cross occupies the central field, its arms terminating in lily ornaments and outlined with a fine border. The arms of the cross divide the field into four quarters, with the arms of the papal legate Monsignor Giovan Maria Ciocchi del Monte and the civic arms of Bologna appearing in the lower quarters. The legend BONONIA DOCET encircles the design within a beaded border, referencing Bologna's celebrated tradition as a seat of learning. The overall design is characteristic of the bold, decorative hammered coinage produced at the Bologna mint under Paul III. |
