Ottavio Farnese received Parma under deeply contested circumstances — his father Pier Luigi was assassinated in 1547, the duchy was seized by imperial forces, and Ottavio spent years caught between his Farnese loyalty to France and his wife Margaret of Austria's ties to the Habsburgs. This scudo was struck during the period when Ottavio finally consolidated control after French intervention forced a Habsburg withdrawal in 1551. The coinage of this window reflects a ruler who had only recently stopped being a pawn in someone else's war.
