Obverse description Central crowned and quartered shield bearing the Gonzaga arms, flanked by two rampant lions as supporters, all set within an ornate Renaissance-style cartouche. The shield displays the Gonzaga dynastic quarters with characteristic heraldic detailing typical of sixteenth-century North Italian coinage. The field surrounding the central device is richly adorned with decorative scrollwork and foliage. The circumferential legend, in Roman capital letters, reads GVLIEL·DVX·MANT·III·ET·MAR·MON·FE, identifying Guglielmo Gonzaga as Third Duke of Mantua and Marquis of Montferrat. The overall composition reflects the refined humanist artistic sensibility of the Mantuan court under the Gonzaga.
