Obverse description Centrally displayed papal coat of arms surmounted by the papal tiara (triregnum) and crossed keys, all within an ornate baroque shield. The arms feature a dragon passant, characteristic of the Boncompagni family of Pope Gregory XIII. A Latin legend surrounds the shield in the outer border, reading clockwise from upper left.

Reverse description A floriated or ornamented cross occupying the central field, dividing the space into four quarters. In the lower portion of the field, the arms of the papal legate Monsignor Francesco Biandrate di San Giorgio are impaled with the arms of the city of Bologna. The surrounding legend reads BONONIA DOCET, the famous motto of the University of Bologna, set within a beaded border.
