Ercole II d'Este ruled Modena through one of the more diplomatically treacherous periods in northern Italian history, caught between Valois France and Habsburg Spain — his father-in-law was Louis XII's successor, his overlords were the Emperor. The scudo d'oro as a denomination was itself a political instrument in this period: Italian signorie adopted it partly to align their coinage with the weight standards spreading from Florence and Rome, signaling financial credibility to merchant networks that crossed every border.
MIR 643 distinguishes multiple die variants across the long 25-year reign. The CNI IX attribution places these firmly within the Este mint at Ferrara operating under Modenese authority.
