Obverse description Seated figure of Saint Geminianus, patron of Modena, facing three-quarters right, wearing pontifical vestments and mitre, raising his right hand in benediction and holding a sceptre in his left hand. The saint is depicted enthroned on a decorative seat, rendered in the Gothic-influenced Italian Renaissance style. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device within a beaded border.

Reverse description An elaborate foliated cross with fleur-de-lis terminals and intricate foliage ornaments at each arm, occupying the centre of the coin within a circular beaded border. The arms of the cross terminate in stylized leaf-work and curving vegetal motifs, characteristic of Renaissance goldsmith artistry. A continuous Latin legend naming the issuing duke runs around the periphery between the inner circle and the beaded rim.
