| Reverse description | Central field occupied by a large, elaborately rendered crowned coat of arms of Savoy, here displayed in a more complex quartered or composite heraldic form with foliate and scrollwork embellishments surrounding the shield, consistent with the elaborate reverse type of the Scudo d'Oro of Emanuele Filiberto. A small cross pattée appears above the crown. The circumferential legend +AVXILIVM. MEVM. ADOMINO. 1555, meaning 'My help comes from the Lord' (Psalm 121:2), runs within a beaded border, with the date 1555 indicating the die preparation year. The hammered execution imparts a characteristically uneven surface typical of mid-sixteenth-century Italian gold coinage. |
