Obverse description Central field features the quartered dynastic shield of Savoy, surmounted by a ducal crown, flanked by decorative foliate or knot-work ornamentation characteristic of Renaissance hammered coinage. The arms display the cross of Savoy prominently. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading the ruler's name and title. The overall style reflects the heraldic hammered gold coinage tradition of mid-sixteenth century northern Italy.
