| Reverse description | A large fleur-de-lis cross fills the reverse field, with four fleurs-de-lis disposed in the quarters, creating a bold cruciform design characteristic of the Scudo d'oro del sole type. The composition is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which runs the Latin legend XPS VINCIT XPS RENAT XPS INPERAT P R — the ancient Carolingian acclamation proclaiming that Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands. The overall design reflects the strong French royal iconographic tradition transplanted to the Milanese mint following the French conquest of 1515. The hammered flan gives the coin a slightly irregular outline. |
