The circular Latin legend reads CAROL III HISP ET SARD REX, identifying Charles III as King of Spain and Sardinia, and runs between the beaded border and an outer rope-like decorative rim. The overall design reflects the late medieval hammered coinage tradition of the Italian states. |

The surrounding Latin legend INIMIC EIVS INDVAM CONFVS — a devotional inscription meaning 'I shall clothe His enemies with shame' — runs between the beaded border and an outer rope-like decorative rim. The overall composition is consistent with the Sardinian scudo d'oro type of the early eighteenth century. |
