Obverse description Central field occupied by the elaborately rendered papal arms of Alexander VIII (Ottoboni family), displaying a double-headed eagle on a divided shield, the lower portion diaper-patterned, all surmounted by the crossed keys of St. Peter and the papal tiara above ornate baroque cartouche work with foliate and acanthus scroll supporters on either side. The circular Latin legend reading ALEXANDER VIII P M A I runs along the periphery, interrupted by pellet stops, within a finely milled border.
