| 背面描述 | The Holy Mother Church personified as a radiant female figure seated upon billowing clouds, nimbed with a sunburst glory, and robed in flowing drapery. In her raised right hand she holds the papal keys, symbol of ecclesiastical authority, while her left arm extends toward a domed church or chapel depicted in the right field. The date MDCCLIV is distributed in the field to the left and right of the central figure. The entire composition exemplifies the high Baroque allegorical style favored by Roman pontifical coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. |

Benedetto XIV — Prospero Lambertini — was by most accounts the most intellectually formidable pope of the eighteenth century, a canonist and scholar who corresponded with Voltaire and Frederick the Great. His pontificate coincided with mounting pressure from European monarchies demanding the suppression of the Jesuits, a conflict that would outlast him and consume his successor. The scudo issues of 1753–54 fall in his final years, when his administration was increasingly occupied with the concordats he negotiated with Naples, Sardinia, and Spain — each one ceding ground the Holy See would spend generations trying to recover.
