The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar legal position — a sovereign entity without territory, issuing coins that are technically legal tender within an issuing authority that controls no land. De Mojana di Cologna served as 77th Grand Master from 1962 until his death in 1988, presiding over a sustained expansion of the Order's humanitarian operations during the Cold War.
