Beschrijving keerzijde A standing full-length figure of Saint John the Baptist is depicted at center, draped in a simple garment, holding a tall staff bearing a pennant in his left hand and gesturing outward with his right. A lamb recumbent at his feet to the lower right serves as his traditional attribute, while stylized vegetation appears in the background. The Latin legend NON SURREXIT MAIOR arcs around the upper border, and the denomination 1 SC. is inscribed in the lower exergue. The composition is rendered in a classical engraving style consistent with the devotional coinage of the Order.

Aanvullende informatie

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar position in numismatics: a sovereign entity without territory, issuing coins that are legal tender in a jurisdiction consisting of two buildings in Rome. The Angelo scudo series draws on the Order's medieval monetary tradition — scudi were struck by the Knights in Rhodes and later Malta from the 15th century onward, giving these modern issues a genuine institutional lineage rather than the invented heritage of most commemorative programs.

The 1988 issue falls within the Order's prolific collector coinage program of the 1980s, administered through the Gran Magistero. These pieces were never intended for circulation.
