Obverse description Papal arms displayed on an ornate shield surmounted by the crossed keys of Saint Peter and the papal tiara, the whole suspended from an elaborate mantle with tasselled cords. The legend ALEXANDER VII P M runs along the outer border, partially visible on the right side of the coin. The shield bears the Chigi family arms, finely detailed in the hammered gold field.

Reverse description An ornate floriated cross with elaborate foliate terminals divides the field, with the date 16-60 placed in the upper two quarters. Two small heraldic shields appear at the lower portion of the cross, flanking a central fleur-de-lis terminal. The mint mark B P (Bologna, Papal) is inscribed at the base below the cross. The circumferential legend BONONIA DOCET runs along the outer border.
