The Banca dello Stato Pontificio was established by Pius IX in 1850, replacing the older Banca Romana arrangement, and this 1 Scudo note belongs to its earliest years of operation. The Scudo was already a dying unit by this point — Italian unification pressures were mounting, and the Papal States would lose most of their territories to the Kingdom of Sardinia by 1860, confining the bank's practical reach to an ever-shrinking enclave around Rome.
Low-denomination Scudo notes from this issuer are genuinely scarce in any condition; small notes circulated hard and were rarely preserved.
