| Beschrijving keerzijde | Full-length facing figure of Christ the Saviour, shown bearded and nimbed with a halo of rays, his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand holding an orb surmounted by a cross, symbolising dominion over the world. The figure stands against an open field surrounded by a circle of twelve small stars arranged symmetrically around the central device. A beaded inner border separates the central design from the circumferential Latin legend, which is divided by pellet and star stops and reads across the full perimeter of the coin. |

Ragusa — modern Dubrovnik — maintained its independence for centuries through a combination of careful diplomacy and strategic tribute payments to both the Ottoman Empire and, at various points, the Habsburg crown. The Scudo issues of this period funded exactly that balancing act: a city-state of roughly 30,000 people keeping larger powers at bay through money rather than military force.
The Republic fell not to war but to Napoleon, who dissolved it by decree in 1808.
