Obverse description The Irish Brian Boru harp (cláirseach), a traditional Gaelic harp rendered in fine detail with ornate decorative interlace on the soundbox, occupies the centre of the field. The instrument is depicted upright with its strings clearly delineated and its forepillar curved elegantly to the left. The country name in Irish Gaelic, ÉIRE, arcs along the left rim, while the date of issue appears vertically along the right rim. The design is executed in a clean, modernist style characteristic of Percy Metcalfe's work for the Irish Free State coinage series.

Reverse description A sturdy Irish bull is depicted in full profile, striding to the right across a ground line that spans the lower field. The animal is rendered with naturalistic musculature and considerable sculptural depth, reflecting the pastoral agricultural identity of the Irish state. The denomination numeral '1S' appears in the upper field above the bull, and the Irish word SCILLING arcs along the lower rim in Gaelic lettering. The engraver's initials 'PM' for Percy Metcalfe are visible in small letters to the right of the ground line.
